OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 and a Slow Wi-Fi

Thursday, May 07, 2015

Updating to OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 for me resulted in having irregular slow Wi-Fi issues.
Using the same modem/router/AP, but connecting the Mac with an Ethernet cable (and disabling Wi-Fi), network speed is ok.

Then I've found this post.

Briefly, issue seems related to AirDrop and AirPlay services network usage by OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.x.

On OS X the dedicated network interface is awdl0

I don't know if setting AirDrop to "No one" discoverability mode solves.
Waiting for Apple to finally patch this bug (it is a BAD, BAD, BAD issue), you can disable the interface (and related AirDrop and AirPlay services) through the command:

sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

To re-enable the service:

sudo ifconfig awdl0 up

Test your network connection speed using (for example) a service like SpeedTest and you should notice the difference.
